Artem is Sugar’s Risk and Operations Analyst and recently joined the team, working closely with Michelle. Artem is an avid gamer, an experimental chef and likes to keep active! Learn a bit more about why he joined and what makes him tick.

Tell the Sugar readers a bit about your background.

I was born and raised in a small city in Siberia, Russia. I came to the UK for my masters degree in International Business and Management. Prior to that I was studying in a lot of different places including a linguistic university in China and the University of Passau in Germany. I started my journey in the Fintech world when I joined MarketFinance as an intern and worked my way into financial risk.

Are you a gamer at heart and what was the last game you played?

I’m a veteran gamer. I started my “career” when I was four and my father bought my (well, our family’s) first PC at home with two games: Quake and Fallout 2. Since then, I’ve been playing non-stop. I’ve played all sorts of games and tried all existing platforms, except for VR I think. When I came to the UK, I brought a small laptop with a discrete graphic card so I could use it for gaming. I decided that before I had a proper gaming setup, I would play all the games I’ve never played starting from the 2000 release year. I made my way up to the year 2009 and then I was able to build my own PC. Right now I’m playing an MMO shooter game called Warframe and on weekends I play Sea of Thieves with my sister, my partner and her sister.

What did you want to do when you were younger?

My vision of my future self went through a huge transformation. I dreamed about being a lawyer, then a judge and then a prosecutor! Later I realised that it might be a bit boring. When I was in middle school I was seriously considering military service, with a view to eventually working in intelligence. The realisation that I wanted to help small businesses came when I co-founded a branch of an NGO in the city where I was getting my bachelor degree. This forced me to study business in general.

Why did you join Sugar?

Mainly company activity and vision. I find the Fintech and game development worlds extremely creative and exciting, so company is a perfect symbiosis where I work on the Fintech side with game developers. I feel that I support developers and help people find new fantastic games.

Where do you hope Sugar will be in 5 years’ time?

I hope Sugar will be the first thing a game/app developer would think about when they need finance for UA, and there would be a special button redirecting developers to us on Google console and Apple store somewhere under the finance/sales section.

What’s your work ethos and routine like?

After I graduated from university I realised that I didn’t have a strict and particular routine, so I created a timetable for myself: 6 am wake up, news and articles reading, if it’s an odd weekday I go to the gym, then breakfast and work. In the evening I make notes on what I learned, what I’m proud of and what I could have done better that day and decide my tasks for the next day. Then comes some studying and for the last hour or two before going to bed I play games.

What do you do when you’re not working?

Gaming and exploring. Some people love watching movies, TV series and reading books –  I play games. London is just a perfect place to explore something new: architecture, food, people, anything.

Do you have any pets?

I do, I got a Scottish straight a week after I joined Sugar. She is an extremely playful and loving cat!

How do you keep healthy?

I go to the gym regularly and try to play badminton with my partner every lunch break, if the weather allows it. I would love to find a local volleyball team but so far I have only managed to find only football teams.

Do you cook and what’s your favourite thing to eat?

Yes! I do all the cooking at home. I have a tradition of cooking a new dish every Saturday, the one I would find only in restaurants or something that people in other countries eat regularly. My favourite is pasta in any form with almost any sauce and meat/vegetables. Normally I cook something Italian or Mexican, but I also experiment a lot.

If you could pick any super power, what would it be and why?

Oh, that’s a tough one. I think it’s time control. Imagine you can stop time, stop ageing and learn all the possible things! That would be my go-to superpower.

If you could go on holiday now (dare to dream!) – where would you go?

My dream holiday would be to go to the USA in New York, rent a 1969 Mustang and drive a complete circle around the country. But right now I’m happy to go to any place with hot weather, all-day sun, beach and water.
